As India steps into the centenary year of iconic cartoonist Mario Miranda, voices are rising for a national-scale celebration. Youth leader Prabhav Naik, speaking on behalf of Madganvcho Awaaz, has called on the government to honor Miranda’s legacy with exhibitions, state tributes, and a dedicated monument. “He captured the soul of a generation,” Naik said. “Now it’s time we capture his spirit in our collective memory.”

But Naik’s appeal isn’t just about one icon.
He’s pushing for a broader cultural movement—one that honors all eminent Goans whose birth centenaries fall in the coming years. That includes Padma Bhushan Laxman Pai, the master painter, and cinematographer K. Vaikunth Kuncolienkar, both of whom also mark their 100th year in 2025.

> “These centenaries aren’t just milestones, they’re mirrors to our identity,” Naik told The Screenbyte. “We must ensure that future generations know whose shoulders they stand on.”

He criticized the routine, often forgettable nature of government events that soak up public funds without creating lasting impact. “Instead of one-off festivities, centenary celebrations offer long-term cultural and educational value. They connect generations, spark conversations, and instill pride.”

Naik envisions a series of initiatives—public art, exhibitions, documentaries, school outreach, and commemorative monuments—designed to embed the stories of Goan legends into the everyday lives of citizens.

The broader message? Preserving heritage isn’t just about old buildings or dusty artifacts—it’s about honoring the people who made us who we are. And in an age where attention spans are short and memories shorter, Naik’s call serves as a powerful reminder: legacies only live on when we choose to remember.
