Margao : A recent response in the Goa Legislative Assembly has revealed that Ravindra Bhavan, Margao is the only such cultural institution in the state where the Chairman is provided with personal staff, at a total annual cost of ₹16.84 lakhs. The information was shared in reply to a Legislative Assembly question on July 23, 2025.

According to the official reply, four individuals, two female personal assistants, one male driver, and one multitasking staff,  have been appointed specifically to serve the Chairman, Rajendra Talak. Each of the personal assistants and the driver draws a monthly salary of ₹35,840, while the multitasking staff member earns ₹32,895.

It was further stated in the House that these appointments are not linked to any regular administrative roles within the institution and that their duties are “as per the instructions of the Chairman.”

Youth leader and social activist Prabhav Naik raised questions about the necessity and justification of such appointments, particularly when no other Ravindra Bhavan or Kala Mandir in the state has similar provisions. He expressed concern over the lack of transparency and the potential misuse of public funds.

“While artists continue to face difficulties due to the prolonged closure of the Pai Tiatrist Auditorium, nearly ₹17 lakhs are being spent annually on staff working directly under the Chairman’s discretion,” said Naik. He urged the state government to clarify whether these appointments were officially sanctioned by the Cabinet or implemented independently.

Naik also called on civil society, especially members of the cultural and artistic community, to remain vigilant and ensure that public institutions remain focused on their cultural missions.

The Government of Goa is yet to respond to the concerns raised. Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, is one of the key cultural hubs in the state and has been central to the local arts and theatre community.
