Margao ESI Hospital Among Locations Under Consideration for Medical College: Prabhav Naik Welcomes Move

Margao: Youth leader and Madganvcho Awaaz representative Prabhav Naik has welcomed Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant’s announcement that the ESI Hospital in Margao is under active consideration by the Union Government as a site for a new Government Medical College.
A Proposal Pending Since 2009
Naik recalled that this proposal was first announced on February 16, 2009, by then Union Labour and Employment Minister Oscar Fernandes. The plan envisioned a Government Medical College with super-speciality facilities in Goa, contingent on the State Government providing suitable land.
“The announcement was made at the ESI Hospital in Margao itself, making it the most logical location for such an institution,” said Naik.
Criticism of Missed Opportunities
Naik criticised former Chief Minister and current MLA Digambar Kamat, claiming that the failure to act on the proposal back then represents a missed opportunity and lack of political will.
“Despite being in a position to allocate land, Mr. Kamat did not pursue the matter, thereby delaying critical healthcare and educational infrastructure in South Goa,” he stated.
‘Silence on Healthcare is Concerning’
Citing a 2009 statement by Mr. Kamat — “The government which fails in providing healthcare facilities to the public has no right to remain in power” — Naik called it ironic that the same leader remains silent on the healthcare challenges facing Margao and its surrounding areas today.
Call for Immediate Upgrades
Naik urged the government to take immediate steps to enhance the existing ESI Hospital, stressing the need to prioritise healthcare access for the working class.
“It is imperative to ensure the hardworking labour force receives proper, accessible, and timely medical care. Strengthening hospital infrastructure, increasing staff, and expanding services should be immediate priorities,” he added.
