Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Monday raised serious concerns over rising noise pollution in Goa’s coastal belt particularly in Vagator, Baga, and Calangute, due to loud music from hotels, restaurants, and clubs continuing beyond permissible hours.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour in the Goa Legislative Assembly, Alemao said that residents were increasingly frustrated with the inaction despite repeatedly filing complaints. “There is a blatant violation of High Court directives and the norms set by the Goa State Pollution Control Board,” he said.

Alemao pointed out that several establishments continue to play music past curfew hours, with some even promoting parties starting at 10 p.m. in defiance of the Supreme Court’s clear orders that no music should be played in non-soundproof venues after 10 p.m.

Calling for strict enforcement, Alemao urged the government to issue stronger directives to the police and other enforcement agencies. “This is not just a law-and-order issue but a matter of public well-being and judicial compliance,” he said.

Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the House that he would instruct the relevant officials to take prompt action against violators.

The issue has sparked ongoing concern among local residents and environmental activists, who fear the unchecked noise pollution is affecting quality of life and setting a dangerous precedent of non-compliance with legal mandates.
