PANAJI: In a significant step to promote the State language and create more employment opportunities for Goan youth, the Department of Posts has made proficiency in Konkani mandatory for all applicants under the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) scheme in the state. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said the move aims to strengthen the linguistic and cultural identity of Goa while ensuring that postal services remain efficient and community-focused.

Under the revised guidelines, candidates who have studied Konkani up to the 10th standard will be eligible to apply. Marathi has also been officially recognised as an eligible local language, allowing candidates proficient in Marathi to apply, provided they also demonstrate competence in Konkani.

Postal authorities noted that prioritising local languages in recruitment is expected to improve last-mile postal delivery and make services more responsive to local needs. The reform reflects the government’s commitment to preserving Goa’s linguistic heritage while offering tangible benefits to young job seekers across the state.
