Kochi takes down Modi welcome boards
Kochi:
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kerala, the Kochi Corporation on Tuesday removed several banners and hoardings welcoming him, citing directions from the Kerala High Court regarding unauthorised public displays.
Corporation officials said the action was taken as part of an ongoing drive against illegal hoardings and flex boards placed on public roads, footpaths and other civic spaces without permission. The removal began early in the morning in different parts of the city where welcome banners had been installed for the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit.
Officials clarified that the drive was not specifically aimed at the Prime Minister’s visit but was carried out in compliance with the High Court’s standing directions to strictly enforce rules against unauthorised publicity materials in public places.
Several banners put up by political workers and supporters welcoming Modi were taken down by civic workers as part of the exercise.
The Kerala High Court has repeatedly directed local bodies across the state to remove illegal hoardings and flex boards that obstruct public spaces and pose safety risks. The court has also asked civic authorities to hold organisers accountable for violations.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Kerala later this week to attend official programmes and public events.
