India retain T20 World Cup title with dominant win over New Zealand

Ahmedabad :

India produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, becoming the first team to successfully defend the title.

After being put in to bat, India posted a formidable 255 for 5, one of the highest totals in the history of the tournament. Opener Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma (52) and Ishan Kishan (54) added crucial runs to build a massive total.

New Zealand’s chase never gathered momentum as India’s bowlers struck at regular intervals. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match winning spell of 4 for 15, dismantling the middle order and effectively ending the contest. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

Tim Seifert’s aggressive 52 provided brief resistance, but the target proved far beyond reach as India maintained relentless pressure with both pace and spin.

Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his decisive bowling performance, while Samson was adjudged Player of the Tournament for his consistent contributions throughout the competition.

The victory marks India’s third T20 World Cup title and the first time any team has retained the championship, reinforcing the side’s growing dominance in the shortest format of the game.

The tournament, co hosted by India and Sri Lanka, featured 20 teams competing across multiple venues from February 7 to March 8.
