Hyderabad Set to Get High-Speed Rail Corridor Linking Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai

India’s ambitious plans for a nationwide bullet train network have taken a major leap forward with the announcement of a 709-kilometer high-speed rail corridor between Hyderabad and Mumbai. This new corridor is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to connect key cities across the country with fast, efficient bullet train services. Authorities are also exploring the possibility of extending the corridor to Bengaluru, which could further enhance connectivity in the region.
In addition, there are discussions underway to extend the proposed Mysuru-Chennai high-speed rail corridor up to Hyderabad, offering a game-changing reduction in travel time between major southern cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru.
At present, India’s first high-speed rail project is underway between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, built with the help of Japanese technology and funding. The Hyderabad-Mumbai corridor, along with other proposed routes like Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai, is part of the next phase of India’s bullet train expansion. The Hyderabad-Chennai and Hyderabad-Bengaluru routes are set to feature a combination of elevated and underground tracks to ensure smooth passage through urban areas.
The Hyderabad-Bengaluru corridor will span 618 kilometers. Currently, travelers face a long journey of around 11 hours on regular superfast trains, or about 8.5 hours on the Vande Bharat Express. However, the introduction of the bullet train is expected to slash this travel time to just 2 hours. Similarly, the 757-kilometer Hyderabad-Chennai route, which now takes about 15 hours on conventional express trains, will be reduced to just 2.5 hours by the high-speed service.
Despite the promising developments, railway officials have indicated that the completion of these bullet train corridors is still several years away, with an estimated timeline of 10 to 13 years for full implementation.
