Highlight Deadly Goa Highways Before Supreme Court : Prabhav Naik
MARGAO: Civil society group Madganvcho Awaaz and youth leader Prabhav Naik have urged Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant to direct Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Digambar Kamat to present Goa’s highway safety concerns before the Supreme Court, which has taken suo motu cognisance of rising accidents on national highways.
The Supreme Court has appointed Senior Advocate Atmaram Nadkarni as amicus curiae and issued notices to the National Highways Authority of India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and six States.
Mr. Naik said that several fatal accidents in Goa over the past decade were linked to flawed road engineering, poor design and inadequate safety measures. He stressed the need to draw the Court’s attention to what he described as high-risk stretches, including the Bambolim section, which he said affects access to the Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital and poses challenges for emergency movement.
He noted that a representation had been made in May 2025 to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding recurrent flooding, traffic congestion and engineering issues around GMC and the South Goa District Hospital, but that the concerns remain unresolved.
Mr. Naik said the Government should place accurate data and field-level findings before the Court to ensure accountability and corrective measures by national agencies.
