God Save Ravindra Bhavan, Margao : Vishal pai Cacode

Margao: As Ravindra Bhavan, Margao prepares for another round of renovations ahead of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), concerns are being raised by artist and former ESG Governing Body Member, Vishal Pai Cacode, about the future of this cultural institution.
“Once upon a time, Kala Academy was renovated for IFFI, only to become a monument of corruption,” stated Pai Cacode. “God save Ravindra Bhavan, Margao,” he added, voicing his fears about the proposed closure of the main auditorium for IFFI-related modifications.
Is Ravindra Bhavan Being Converted Into a Film Theatre?
Responding to Chairman Rajendra Talak’s announcement about shutting the main auditorium for two months, Pai Cacode raised a red flag about the impact on acoustics and structural layout. He questioned whether the Pai Tiatrist Auditorium is being converted into a film theatre, and whether such changes would compromise its original design.
According to Cacode, crores have already been spent on repairs at Ravindra Bhavan over the past five years. “Why are repeated renovations required? Is there a hidden agenda behind these changes?” he asked. He warned that like Kala Academy, Ravindra Bhavan could soon suffer from flawed architecture, poor acoustics, and a loss of cultural relevance.
Transparency Demanded on Consultants and Costs
“There is zero transparency on who is leading this renovation project. Who is the consultant? What is the cost? Who are the contractors?” asked Cacode. He called for this information to be made public immediately, emphasizing the need for accountability in public spending.
Local Talent Ignored While Funds Go to Outsiders
Another major concern raised was the underutilization of the annex building and the lack of regular music, dance, and theatre classes for Goan youth. Pai Cacode also alleged that nearly 60% of program funding goes to non-Goan artists, which contradicts Ravindra Bhavan’s core purpose of nurturing local talent.
Allegations of Favoritism and Political Appointments
Cacode did not hold back in criticizing the preferential treatment given to one institution closely linked to the Chairman, which has allegedly received massive grants, while other deserving organizations in Margao are overlooked.
He also highlighted the lack of representation from the broader Salcete region in the Bhavan’s Executive Committee, claiming that most members are from Margao and Fatorda, with many having no background in art or culture. “This politically motivated setup is eroding the Bhavan’s credibility,” he charged.
In his closing remarks, Pai Cacode urged authorities to ensure that Ravindra Bhavan remains true to its cultural roots. “The people of Salcete deserve answers. We demand full transparency and a commitment to preserve the original layout and cultural purpose of this institution,” he stated.
