Danny : Bollywood Icon and Brewing Tycoon
Danny Denzongpa, born Tsering Phintso, is a celebrated actor from Sikkim who has left an indelible mark on Bollywood over the past five decades. Beyond his illustrious film career, Danny is a successful entrepreneur, having founded Yuksom Breweries in 1987 in South Sikkim. Expanding his business ventures, he established Denzong Breweries in Odisha in 2005 and acquired Assam’s Rhino Agencies in 2009. Together, these breweries boast a production capacity of 6.8 lakh hectoliters annually, making Yuksom the third-largest beer company in India. Their popular brands, such as Dansberg and He-Man 9000, contribute significantly to the north-eastern economy, adding Rs 100 crore annually and employing over 250 people.
The acquisition of Rhino Agencies was a strategic masterstroke. At the time, United Breweries, led by Vijay Mallya, was eyeing the North-East market with plans to buy Rhino. Danny’s Yuksom Breweries preempted the move, acquiring Rhino and safeguarding its market dominance. This pivotal decision not only solidified Danny’s business acumen but also curtailed UB’s expansion plans in the region.
Danny’s cinematic journey began in 1971 with BR Ishara’s Zaroorat, followed by memorable performances in Mere Apne and Dhundh. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he captivated audiences with roles in films like Chor Machaye Shor, Kalicharan, Dharmatma, and The Burning Train. Transitioning to negative and character roles in the late 1980s, Danny delivered iconic performances in Agneepath, Ghatak, Krantiveer, and Indian.
In the last two decades, he has shone in supporting roles in hits like Asoka, Enthiran, and Bang Bang, while also starring in international films like Seven Years in Tibet.
Danny Denzongpa’s dual legacy as a Bollywood icon and a visionary entrepreneur continues to inspire.
