Congress flays 20% hike in power tariff during peak hours in Goa
Panaji : The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Thursday sharply criticised the State government’s decision to impose a 20% additional charge on electricity consumption between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m., terming it “a cruel attack on the common people.”
In a statement issued by GPCC spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar, the party alleged that the BJP-led government had resorted to “daylight robbery” by burdening Goans who are already facing rising prices, unemployment, and an economic slowdown.
“This move will directly affect households, students, small shopkeepers, and business establishments that rely heavily on electricity during these hours. Instead of offering relief, the Sawant-led government is punishing citizens for its inefficiency in managing the power sector,” Mr. Panjikar said.
The Congress accused the government of turning its “Swayampurna Goa” (self-reliant Goa) slogan into “Suffering Goa,” citing increases in fuel prices, water tariffs, and now electricity charges.
The party has demanded that the State government immediately withdraw what it termed a “draconian and unjust” hike, warning of widespread protests if the decision is not rolled back.
“The people of Goa will not remain silent spectators. The Congress Party stands firmly with Goans in opposing these anti-common man policies,” the statement added.
