Artist and former Member of the Goa State Cultural Development Committee, Vishal Pai Cacode, has emphasized the need for transparent, inclusive, and culturally aware leadership in Goa’s public cultural institutions. Speaking in the wake of the temporary closure of the Pai Tiatrist Auditorium at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, he called for administrators who prioritize the interests of the artistic community over political alignment.

“We need administrators who understand and support culture, not those who merely echo the government’s voice,” said Pai Cacode. “Ravindra Bhavan must reflect Goa’s diverse cultural ethos through accountable and inclusive management.”

Pai Cacode expressed concern over the abrupt closure of the auditorium, which he said had caused inconvenience to several artists and event organizers. The auditorium has been shut until May 25 for roof repairs, a decision Pai Cacode criticized as poorly timed and inadequately communicated. “Such last-minute decisions disrupt planned cultural activities and cause financial and emotional losses to performers,” he said.

Citing documents sourced from government departments, Pai Cacode pointed out that nearly ₹2 crore had already been spent on roof repairs at Ravindra Bhavan over the past two years. “With such significant expenditure already made, the need for further repairs raises questions about planning, execution, and transparency,” he said.

He also highlighted additional expenditures approximately ₹1 crore on the air conditioning system and ₹50 lakhs on lighting and illumination, questioning the frequency and cost of these repairs. “The pattern suggests a lack of proper oversight and raises concerns about possible financial mismanagement,” Pai Cacode noted.

Questioning the timing of the new round of repairs, he remarked, “Why wait until the last week of May, when multiple performances were scheduled? This shows either administrative negligence or a disregard for the artistic community.”

Pai Cacode concluded by urging authorities to adopt a more culturally sensitive and accountable approach in managing institutions like Ravindra Bhavan, ensuring that public funds are used efficiently and that artists are treated with respect and fairness.
