Alemao Slams Solar Ferry Mission and Urges Action on Homeless Women & PwD

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao raised serious concerns over two major issues in the state on Monday, criticising the government’s mishandling of the Solar Ferry Mission and the lack of financial support for homeless women and persons with disabilities (PwD).

Solar Ferry Mission a “Total Commission” – Alemao

Alemao accused the government of misappropriating public funds on the Solar Ferry Mission, describing it as a “total commission.” He claimed that a solar-electric hybrid ferry, procured for approximately ₹3.97 crore, was unsuitable for Goa’s river conditions and ultimately led to a waste of taxpayers’ money.

In his statement, the Cuncolim MLA pointed out that the Captain of Ports had raised concerns about the ferry’s unsuitability for local waters, but these warnings were ignored. “Despite the red flags, the ferry was put into operation for just three months, after which it remained idle for the last three years. The ferry could not carry vehicles, and user numbers were low. Rodents damaged its internal wiring,” Alemao revealed.

The LoP questioned why the government had proceeded with the purchase despite repeated advisories about its economic viability and suitability for Goa’s rivers. He also highlighted that the necessary charging infrastructure for the ferry was not ready at the time of procurement. Alemao argued that even the repair costs of the Betim Ferry boat over the past five years, which amounted to around ₹1.09 crore, exceeded the cost of a new ferry, making the purchase of the solar ferry even more questionable.

Alemao demanded an immediate investigation into the matter, urging the government to hold accountable those responsible for ignoring expert advice and wasting public funds.

Alemao Highlights Issues with Homeless Women and PwD Welfare

In a separate issue, Alemao moved a Zero Hour motion in the Legislative Assembly concerning the plight of homeless women and persons with disabilities (PwD). He expressed concern over the Street Providence, which operates 11 homes for the homeless, currently housing 150 residents. According to Alemao, while the government had made budgetary provisions for these homes, the funds had yet to be released due to a delay in finalising the scheme and regulations.

“The Minister for Social Welfare and the Chief Minister need to prioritise this issue. These homes may face temporary closure if the funds are not released promptly,” Alemao warned.

He urged the government to take immediate action and ensure the welfare of the vulnerable sections of society, stressing that the state had a moral responsibility to protect its most marginalized citizens.
