AAP Urges Immediate Opening of ₹80-Crore Tuem Hospital

Panaji : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has renewed its demand that the Goa government immediately operationalize the ₹80-crore, 100-bed hospital located in Tuye village, Pernem taluka. Despite being affiliated with Goa Medical College and constructed years ago, the facility remains non-functional, causing serious inconvenience to residents in northern Goa.

AAP Supports Public Demand for Hospital Activation

Speaking at a press briefing, AAP Goa President Adv. Amit Palekar, Pernem taluka leader Pundalik Dhargalkar, and AAP Mandrem Women’s Wing Head Suvarna Harmalkar expressed solidarity with the Tuye Citizens Action Committee. AAP has extended full support to a public meeting organized by the committee on July 20, 2025, at 10:30 AM, urging citizens to participate and raise their voices.

Over a Decade of Delay Since Parrikar-Laid Foundation Stone

Palekar noted that the hospital’s foundation was laid in 2012 by then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Originally estimated at ₹40–₹50 crore, the project has since escalated to ₹80 crore with no signs of being made operational.

On June 28, residents inspected the hospital premises and expressed their dissatisfaction with the prolonged delay. AAP leaders were present at the site during a meeting convened by the Tuye Citizens Action Committee, where calls for immediate action intensified.

Critical Health Gap in Pernem and Mandrem

“Residents of Pernem and Mandrem have no access to timely medical care. They are forced to travel to Panaji or Mapusa for even basic treatment, which has led to avoidable loss of lives,” said Palekar, calling for the government to prioritize public health over bureaucratic delays.

Dhargalkar highlighted concerns about the government’s alleged plan to relocate the local public health center to a new facility, rather than converting it into a full-fledged hospital. “₹80 crore has been spent. This should not be another white elephant,” he said.

Women Patients Worst Affected, Says AAP Leader

Suvarna Harmalkar shared the plight of women in Mandrem, many of whom suffer due to the lack of adequate healthcare. “Even for minor issues, we have to travel long distances. Meanwhile, the government is reportedly spending ₹3 lakh a month just on electricity bills for an unused building. This is a gross misuse of public funds,” she said.

With rising public frustration and growing pressure from local action groups, AAP has demanded that the Tuye hospital be made operational without further delay. The party reiterated that health infrastructure cannot be held hostage to administrative apathy.
