Panaji : A delegation of residents and activists campaigning against casino operations on the Mandovi river reached the City Corporation of Panaji (CCP) on Wednesday for a meeting that had been scheduled with Mayor Rohit Monserrate. The group included Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa president Valmiki Naik.

According to AAP leaders, Mr. Naik was removed by police personnel during the meeting after a confrontation at the venue. The party alleged that selective force was used and described the action as an attempt to curb dissent over the anti-casino campaign. Police officials were present at the CCP premises to manage the gathering.

The visit followed ongoing protests by sections of Panaji residents opposing the proposed expansion and continued operation of casinos on the Mandovi river, including concerns over high-rise casino vessels. The campaign has drawn participation from local citizens’ groups and political representatives.

Speaking after the incident, Mr. Naik said he did not hold individual police personnel responsible but alleged that political pressure influenced the action taken at the venue. He also criticised the Mayor for not accepting the delegation’s memorandum in person and reiterated his party’s demand for removal of river-based casinos.

AAP Goa senior vice-president Sandesh Teleikar Dessai condemned the police action and accused the State government of suppressing opposition voices. He said the party would continue to support citizen-led protests on civic and environmental issues.
