Amazon to bring AI access to millions in India by 2030
Bengaluru : Amazon on Thursday announced a wide-ranging plan to expand artificial intelligence (AI) access across India, aligning with the Government of India’s AI Mission to deepen digital inclusion, enhance productivity and strengthen nationwide AI adoption. The company said it is on track to invest $12.7 billion in local cloud and AI infrastructure by 2030 and aims to enable over 15 million small businesses through AI-driven tools and services.
Amazon has also committed to providing AI literacy and career awareness to 4 million government-school students by 2030 through curriculum support, hands-on learning modules and teacher enablement programmes. The initiative is designed to help students—particularly in underserved regions—build future-ready skills in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
Samir Kumar, Country Manager, Amazon India, said AI has the potential to “break down barriers of language, literacy and access,” enabling entrepreneurs, students and shoppers across the country to benefit from next-generation technology. “We believe every Indian deserves to participate in this transformation,” he added.
Infrastructure and Skilling
Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to expand its cloud and AI capabilities across Telangana and Maharashtra as part of its $12.7-billion investment plan. AWS serves a wide range of Indian enterprises using its agentic AI solutions, including DigiYatra, Apollo Tyres and Axis Bank. Since 2017, AWS has trained more than 6.2 million individuals in India in cloud and AI skills through programmes such as AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate, AWS re/Start and its newly launched AI courses.
AI Tools for Small Businesses
Amazon outlined a suite of AI-driven tools aimed at simplifying selling and improving operational efficiency for India’s small businesses:
Seller Assistant now uses agentic AI to understand store context, analyse goals and operate proactively on behalf of sellers.
Next-Generation Seller Central offers a modernised interface with an intelligent Action Center and customizable dashboards.
GenAI Listings Tools help sellers create high-quality product listings using brief descriptions, images or URLs, with global acceptance rates of about 90%.
Creative Studio enables sellers to transform product images into videos and develop ad creatives.
Video Generator allows businesses to create high-quality video ads at no additional cost.
These capabilities are designed to help entrepreneurs, particularly those in smaller towns, scale their operations with enterprise-grade technology.
AI for Students
Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY and CEO, IndiaAI Mission, said Amazon’s education initiative will help shape a more equitable digital future. Integrating AI into classrooms, he noted, is crucial for nurturing innovators capable of developing solutions for India and global markets.
AI-led Shopping Experience
Amazon said hundreds of millions of Indians are already experiencing AI-driven improvements on Amazon.in, with more advancements planned. Shopping journeys will become increasingly intuitive through multimodal and multilingual interaction, personalised summaries and intelligent assistants.
Key features include:
Rufus, Amazon’s AI shopping assistant, which delivers tailored recommendations, price history, value comparisons and simplified product evaluations.
Lens AI, a visual search tool that lets customers shop using photos, screenshots or barcodes.
Augmented Reality (AR) View, allowing customers to visualise furniture and décor in their homes before purchase.
Amazon said these advancements help reduce friction for shoppers across metros and deeper markets, overcoming challenges of language, literacy and digital familiarity.
