Will PM Modi Attend G7 Summit 2025 in Canada?

Kananaskis, Alberta :  Canada is set to host the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit from June 15 to 17, marking a high-profile international gathering amid strained diplomatic ties with India. The summit will take place in Kananaskis, Alberta, and leaders from several global powers, including South Africa, Ukraine, and Australia, have reportedly confirmed their participation.

However, there is growing uncertainty around Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance, making it a key focus of global and diplomatic interest.

Will PM Modi Attend the G7 Summit in Canada?

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from New Delhi or Ottawa on whether Prime Minister Modi will be attending the G7 summit. This is significant because PM Modi has been invited to every G7 Summit since 2019.

According to a Times of India (TOI) report, sources suggest that Modi is unlikely to travel to Canada, citing:

  • Ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada

  • Logistical constraints around last-minute travel

  • Concerns over potential protests or disruptions by separatist groups

A Canadian G7 spokesperson declined to comment on whether an invitation had been extended to Modi.

G7 2025: Guest Leaders and Invited Nations

The Group of Seven (G7) includes Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with the President of the European Commission.

Canadian media reports suggest that Ottawa has invited the leaders of:

  • Australia

  • South Africa

  • Ukraine

  • Brazil

There is no official announcement yet from the Canadian government regarding India’s invitation, sparking speculation about whether the India-Canada diplomatic chill will impact Modi’s participation.

India-Canada Tensions: The Nijjar Case Fallout

The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada soured in 2023 after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian government “agents” were linked to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistani separatist leader, on Canadian soil.

India strongly rejected the allegations, calling them “absurd and politically motivated.”

Two years later, with Mark Carney now serving as Canadian Prime Minister, both nations have expressed a desire to improve ties. Whether this thaw translates into a G7 invitation for India remains to be seen.

Sikh Groups Urge Canada Not to Invite Modi

Canadian Sikh organizations are actively lobbying the government to exclude PM Modi from this year’s G7 summit.

According to CBC News, the Toronto-based Sikh Federation has urged Ottawa to withhold the invitation until India demonstrates substantial cooperation in Canada’s ongoing investigation into Nijjar’s murder.

This adds further complexity to what has already become a diplomatic flashpoint ahead of the global summit.

What’s at Stake?

If PM Modi skips the 2025 summit, it would be the first G7 summit he does not attend in over five years. The decision will be viewed as a diplomatic signal—either reinforcing or easing tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa.

With global attention focused on the summit, the final list of guest leaders could shape geopolitical optics and alliances going forward.
