Panaji:

At the inaugural Shrimati Samnotsav program held at the Big B Auditorium in Khandola, renowned actress Varsha Usgaonkar made an impassioned appeal to women, urging them to always maintain their self-respect. She emphasized that only when women uphold their dignity will society respect them in return. “Women must never underestimate themselves, regardless of the circumstances. Self-respect is key, and every woman must always protect it,” Usgaonkar said during her speech.

The event, organized by the Priyol Pragati Manch, was attended by a host of dignitaries, including State Art and Culture Minister Govind Gawde, Priyol Pragati Manch President Yugank Nayak, Program Head Reena Gawde, North Goa Zilla Parishad Member Sramesh Bhosale, and other key figures from the local BJP, including Anisha Gawde and Sulakshana Sawant.

As part of the program, the Shrimati Samman award was presented to four outstanding women — Vatsala Gawde, Bharati Bhatta, Kalpana Naik, and Ratna Gawde — in recognition of their significant contributions to social service, particularly their efforts in balancing family and community responsibilities. The awardees received a certificate, a badge, a shawl, and a shriphal.

In a special segment of the ceremony, the first-ever Gomant Pratibha Puraskar was awarded to renowned Konkani writer and publisher Hema Nayak. The Sahitya Akademi Award winner was honored by Varsha Usgaonkar for her significant contributions to literature and social service. The award included a certificate, medal, shawl, and shriphal, symbolizing the organization’s gratitude for Nayak’s lifelong dedication to the arts and social causes.

The program reached a high point with a musical performance by Goa’s beloved singer Hema Sardesai, who performed a selection of her popular Konkani and Hindi songs. Her lively performance turned the event into an impromptu song-and-dance celebration, with women of all ages dancing joyously to the rhythm of the music.

In his address, State Art and Culture Minister Govind Gawde shared his thoughts on the importance of positive ideals for women. Drawing inspiration from historical figures, he said, “Just as Jijau gave birth to Shivaji Maharaj and established Swarajya, every woman today must look up to such ideals. It is essential to keep negative thoughts and negative people at bay, as these can obstruct a woman’s path to success. Women have the power to overcome these obstacles and shape a positive society for the future.”

The event also featured cultural performances by women’s groups and local artists from Priyol and surrounding areas. The program was conducted smoothly by Pranitha Sawant and Shalaka Lavande, who kept the audience engaged throughout. The event celebrated women’s strength and resilience while encouraging them to continue striving for personal and societal empowerment.
