On Monday, leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao said that Goa may witness a Wayanad-like landslide soon if the Government continues to allow illegal Land Conversion in Catchment and Command Areas and does not control Hill Cuttings and Land Fillings.

Speaking during a discussion on demands for grants for Town and Country Planning, Municipal Administration, Women and Child Development and Forests for the financial year 2024-25, in the Legislative Assembly, Yuri Alemao said, “Goa needs to find out its Carrying Capacity now.”

He pointed out that there are 2,000 complaints of hill cutting incidents in the State, which he said, was nothing, but rampant promotion of landslides. Government authorities are just turning a blind eye on major violations, pointed Yuri Alemao.

TCP and Revenue Departments have failed to act. Anyone can do anything in Goa. May it be encroachments, illegal construction, land filling, land grabbing. There is no control from Government, said Yuri Alemao.

Approving mega projects without conducting proper environmental impact assessment and encroachments on eco-sensitive zones will directly contribute to water scarcity, land slides and irreversible damages, Yuri Alemao said.

Stating that challenging the High Court order spending crores of rupees on court cases on the issue of notifying Tiger Reserve was against the interest of Goa, Yuri said, demanding that the government must notify Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding areas as Tiger Reserve.

It is shocking that Government gives excuse of Human Habitats getting affected due to Tiger Reserve when in reality Government has not done any survey to check the number of Human Habitats in the area of Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary where the Tiger Reserve is proposed, Yuri Alemao stated.

He said Apna Ghars in the State are in deteriorating conditions while nothing has been done on law to stop widow discrimination in Goa.

Stating that the Cuncolim Municipal Council building is shaking and file for its shifting is kept pending, he urged the government not to give step-motherly treatment to Congress-backed CMC. He urged to regularise employees working on contract in municipalities.
